Far West football and netball cancelled for 2020

There will be just one Eyre Peninsula football league and no netball associations playing in 2020 following the decision for Far West football and netball to cancel their seasons.

The Far West Football League announced on Thursday it would not go ahead with their seasons in 2020, following the similar decision from the Far West Netball Association the previous day.

In a statement, league president Ron Redford said the league had received notice in writing from two club's of their intentions to not participate, which made it impossible to proceed.

"The league executive are very supportive and respectful of the decisions made by each individual club," he said.

"Far West Football League acknowledges the time and effort clubs and officials have invested into making their decision on the 2020 season."

Mr Redford said the league had looked at forming a composite competition between Far West and Mid West Football League clubs who wished to play but it did not eventuate.

He said the safety of players and officials was the number one priority.

The netball association held a meeting involving representatives from member clubs on Tuesday and announced that based on similar grounds of two clubs not wishing to participate, it was agreed that the season should not take place.

Association president Tracey Chandler said the two clubs should be commended for making their decisions early and making safety of members a top priority.

"We're disappointed we have to cancel this season but it's for the safety of everybody," she said.

The association will look at implementing a skills and development academy programme for junior players over six weeks in term three, pending club interest.

Mrs Chandler said people wanting more information should get in contact with their relevant clubs.

Far West joins Eastern Eyre, Mid West and Great Flinders in cancelling their football and netball seasons, as well as Port Lincoln Netball Association which is also not going ahead in 2020.

Port Lincoln Football League is set to start its season on July 4 as a five-team competition with Mallee Park Football Club deciding to sit out the year.
