The decision has been made to cancel this year's Port Pirie Smelters Picnic due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty of ongoing restrictions.
Port Pirie Regional Council Mayor Leon Stephens, Local Member Geoff Brock, and Nyrstar met with the Smelters Picnic Committee last week to discuss the planning and delivery of the picnic.
Key community stakeholders and the Smelters Picnic Committee are aware of the significance the picnic has had on residents and the region each year, but after reviewing advice from the State Government they made the decision to protect the community.
The cancellation is considered a one-off decision and the committee will continue to meet regularly with key stakeholders if another smaller event may be held later in the year.
Any further updates regarding the status of this year's picnic will be posted on the Nyrstar and Picnic Committee face book page and the Port Pirie Regional Council website.
It is the intention of the partners that the picnic will return next year.
