For over 50 years the Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal has relied on donations collected by thousands of people who would door knock in their communities during May and June.
But, this year the appeal has a different look as the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way the world used to work.
This time communities and locals are being asked to become digital fundraisers or they can donate by going to digitaldoorknock.salvationarmy.org.au and using a postcode to find their nearest Red Shield Appeal to help those doing it tough.
The Salvos want to enlist virtual collectors and local businesses to fundraise for the appeal by signing up family, friends and colleagues.
Over the past year the Salvos provided an ongoing response to drought, while Salvation Army Emergency Services responded to the rolling bushfires crisis by providing more than 500,000 meals and refreshments to first responders and displaced people.
For the first time, donors can ask that donations be allocated to a specific community to help fund local projects such as helping vulnerable and disadvantaged young people, providing help for the homeless and provide meals for those who are struggling.
