"Opportunities are knocking" for fit, community-minded women and men in country South Australia to join their fire stations as part-time firefighters.
The call comes from Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) who serve the community by responding to emergencies, ranging from house and business fires, to Hazmat and road crash rescues.
With a number of vacancies available for paid positions across the state, Kapunda MFS senior firefighter Wayne Arthur is among the core keen to welcome a new crew member to the station.
Mr Arthur says eight years with the service has led him to open doors he didn't believe possible.
The Kapunda resident was recently deployed to Kangaroo Island during the bushfires. "It was certainly a new and different experience," he explained.
His extensive knowledge with emergencies resulted in him instructing firefighters during a breathing apparatus (BA) course in Adelaide.
His passion and commitment to serve others, he says, is also bolstered by his fellow MFS crew members.
"While I enjoy the training and gaining new skills, I get to work with firefighters with mutual interests," he shared.
More recently, the mateship among his crew extended to town's CFS members. "We are doing a lot more interactive training together with CFS, including doing BA training," he said.
As for the criteria to the role, Mr Arthur says a long as the person is relatively fit, has a willingness to learn and be interactive, plus live 10 minutes from the station, then they should be in good stead.
MFS acting assistant chief fire officer regional operations Dave Colliar said serving the community should be in the heart of every recruit.
"Challenges presented to today's retained firefighters are demanding but the role is also very rewarding," Mr Colliar said.
"We hope to find women and men who will not only serve the local community but will also bring credit to themselves and the fire service."
