Softball season ready to fire up

Senior softball commences at Leonard Park on Saturday with all teams starting out with new faces, the return of players from a leave of absence for 12 months and some juniors being elevated into senior ranks. Even with changes to team personnel - expect some good softball with some very experienced players in all teams.

The A2 and A3 competition has been combined to give players in those respective grades an opportunity to play in a better competition. There will be some double headers in this grade and, on occasions a bye, but all teams will get a full 18 round competition.

A1 Women

Checkmates face off against Cougars. Steven Roberts oversees the senior team once again and Jan Haren has stepped up to be the assistant coach. Rohan Voumard will continue as coach for Cougars.

It will be interesting to see who Cougars put on the mound to pitch, this was a failing towards the end of the season last year, but they do have some promising juniors who might fill the ranks.

The 3.15 time slot will be a replay of last year's grand final with Tigers and Cats facing off against each other. Callie Siwak will be a welcome return for Cats and should slot straight into the pitching position. One noticeable absentee from the Cats line up will be Steph Cutler who is having a spell. Jess Finlayson will coach Tigers and Mandy Bridley will once again coach Cats.

A2-A3

Checkmates A3 and Cougars A3 face off at 1.30, it is expected that Cougars might have the edge in this one. Cougars seem to have a greater depth of players in all 3 grades now.

Simone Kemp will oversee the A2 Cougars side - returning as a premiership coach. They play Checkmates A2 and from what I hear Sam Youngman for Checkmates is back playing, but not coaching. This will give her the opportunity to concentrate on what she does well - putting the ball over the plate and making batters hit the ball.

In the 5.00 game Solly Cats will play Cougars A3 it will be interesting to see just how good the depth of the Cougars club is. This is a game that Cats should not take lightly.
