In a shock move, the international tennis classic will be scrapped next year.

Tennis SA, Port Pirie and Districts Tennis Association and Port Pirie Regional Council have called off the Port Pirie Tennis International. Tennis SA chief executive officer Steven thanked the association and council for their "unwavering support and longstanding commitment" to the event and Australian Pro Tour.

"We will redirect more resources to regional South Australia with a focus on participation in clubs, associations and schools," he said.

"We are excited to work closely with the association to continue to build the sport and inspire more people to pick up a racquet."

Association president David Tilbrook said his group was proud to have been a part of the Australian Pro Tour for the past 25 years.

"We will channel our energy towards participation and growth at grassroots level of the sport and we look forward to what the future holds for tennis in our region," he said.

"We are thrilled to have been a part of the journey for so many future champions."
