Port Pirie-born journalist Greg Mayfield accepted an Order of Australia Medal at Government House on Thursday.

Mr Mayfield's Australia Day Honours award for service to the print media and community was presented by Governor Hieu Van Le.

Watching the ceremony in the ornate hall of the building were Mr Mayfield's wife Ros, son and Whyalla journalist Louis and mother Ruth Birrell.

Mr Mayfield stood at the end of a red carpet facing the Governor as his citation was read out and was then greeted warmly by Mr Le who asked about Mr Mayfield's wife and son.

Mr Mayfield, who is the senior journalist with The Recorder, said later that he regarded the award as being from his country, not a government, and he accepted it on behalf of all journalists.
