The latest round of baseball saw Panthers Majors tackle the double header, in a new format due to the unavailability of Memorial Oval. Friday night saw Panthers and Cats fight out a close game while Tigers had a convincing win on Saturday night.
Cats stole the lead late in the game in a 5-1 victory over Panthers on Friday. The game was tied at one with Cats Majors batting in the bottom of the fifth when Mark Stephens singled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run. Cats knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the third inning. Adam Bowering doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.
Bowering was the winning pitcher for Cats. They went six innings, allowing one run on six hits and striking out four. Ashley Langsford took the loss for Panthers. They lasted six innings, allowing eight hits and five runs while striking out four and walking one.
Cats collected eight hits. Cameron Harvey and Rob Anderson each collected multiple hits for Cats. Anderson and Harvey each managed two hits to lead Cats Majors. Cats didn't commit a single error in the field. Scott Wardle had eight chances in the field, the most on the team. Panthers totaled six hits in the game. Riley Twigden, Lex Williams, and Jack Steff all had multiple hits for Panthers Majors.
Jordan Fuller shut down Panthers Majors, throwing a complete game shutout and leading Tigers Majors to a 18-0 victory on Saturday. Caleb Thornton led Tigers to victory by driving in five runs. They went 2-for-3 at the plate. Thornton drove in runs on a sacrifice fly in the first, a single in the second, and a double in the fourth. Tigers got things moving in the first inning. Kris Nankivell's sac fly scored one run for Tigers.
Tigers scored seven runs in the fourth inning. Nankivell, Thorton, Nathan Lynch, Casey O'Neill, and David Keynes all drove in runs in the frame. One bright spot for Panthers Majors was a single by Jack Steff in the first inning. Fuller earned the win for Tigers. They lasted five innings, allowing two hits and zero runs while striking out three. Lex Williams took the loss for Panthers. They went three innings, allowing 11 runs on ten hits, striking out two and walking one.
Tigers had 16 hits in the game. O'Neill, Jake Brooks, Thornton, Keynes, Jaikob Mathews, and Lynch each managed multiple hits for Tigers. O'Neill led Tigers with three hits in four at bats. Tigers didn't commit a single error in the field. Lynch had seven chances in the field, the most on the team. Tigers tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Brooks led the way with two.
No games in the Minors competition due to a forfeit from Cats Blue, giving Tigers the win. The Juniors competition saw Panthers and Tigers tie 10-10. This week’s Juniors game will see Cats and Panthers play on Thursday night. Minors games will see Cats Blue and Cats White play and Panthers play Tigers, all on Friday night. Saturday night will see the majors match up of Cats and Tigers, while a minors catch up game will be played between Panthers and Cats White. Games will be played at Leonard Park.
