The Northern Demons have completed their overall tough and away trial assignments and where coach Joel Porter mixed his starting combinations as the Reds came across some strong opposition in metropolitan Adelaide and now waits for the season proper to begin.
And after last weekend’s full Byrne Park training, Porter now will conduct another, this time in Adelaide next weekend before the Demons will be back at its headquarters hosting Port Adelaide FC in a 6pm kick-off to the State League 2 season.
A certainly improved but yet revealed State League 2 Northern Demons combinations opened up their trial campaign against former opponent Fulham United, then away again to Noarlunga United before double Adelaide twilight games against Sturt Lions and the Cove FC where the Reds completed a trial series against all State League 1 opponents.
The first trial against Fulham United was won by the home team 4-3 after the halftime score was level at 1-1, while in the second trial against Noarlunga United saw the “Sky Blues” win 3-0 after the Demons trailed 0-1 at the long break.
The first of the two twilight games the Demons again trailed 0-1 before losing 0-2 the trial against Sturt Lions and where new Reds goalkeeper made his first appearance in, but in a game several senior players were seen playing top soccer in.
The three trials played all saw the Demons narrowly trailing at halftime and this never changed for the Joel Porter coached team when in the final game his team was level at 1-1 before Cove FC went onto score three unanswered second half goals to win 4-1.
The Northern Demons trial results suggest a consistent pattern where the Demons lost their games all in the second half period and probably more alarming was the Reds went onto score only four goals in their four-game trial campaign and something that could be a worry especially with Porter expected to lose last season’s top scorer.
There’s no doubt the Northern Demons will settle all three teams after a long period where the Reds coaching group would have closely looked at different issues, and maybe like last season the Joel Porter led Byrne Park team will again see new young faces given opportunities in league company.
But with probably at least four new faces signed and ready for the new season it is expected that the Northern Demons will be a much more settled unit even though Porter’s team confronts three strong opponents in the opening weeks of the State League 2 soccer season.
