Supporters rallied around Kellie Martlew on Friday night as the community continued its fundraising efforts for her trip to the Summer Special Olympics Games in Abu Dhabi.
A music night fundraiser, with entertainment provided by the Billy Goat Hill Band, was held at the Port Pirie Sporting and Community Club. Addressing the room full of people, Kellie’s mum Nancy fought back tears as she thanked the community for backing her daughter.
“It’s been phenomenal, fantastic and overwhelming,” she said.
She paid tribute to the work of a committee fundraising for the trip as well as individuals, businesses and groups who united for the cause.
Mayor Leon Stephens, reflecting on the support shown to Kellie, said it was such a beautiful thing to be part of a community like Port Pirie.
“People here believe in you,” he told the gathering. “I’m sure you will be a great ambassador for us.”
Kellie embarks overseas next month to compete in the Australian team.
