Seven-a-side soccer a huge hit | PHOTOS

A new seven-a-side soccer competition being coordinated by the Northern Demons is taking Port Pirie by storm.

Now in its sixth week, it boasts up to almost 280 players across 22 teams in addition to a girls division.

Teams are competing in Under 10s, Under 14s, Seniors 16+ and Over 30s with juniors on Tuesdays and seniors on Wednesdays. It’s a shortened version of a traditional soccer game with two 20-minute halves.

While Demons and fellow local soccer club Savoy have players competing in the series, other social groups and sports have jumped at the chance to participate.

While there will be a finals series at the end for the more senior divisions, it has been organised by the Demons in the hope of generating more interest in soccer in a fun atmosphere.

Northern Demons’ Justin Turci, who is coordinating the competition, said the club had been overwhelmed by the response.

“It’s been amazing. We were expecting about 150,” he said.

“We wanted to get more people involved that might not normally play soccer.

“We wanted to make it more about a social and fun night – it’s about having a beer and a snag and enjoying some soccer.”

Turci said they were hoping to see the competition grow in the future.

In addition to further promoting soccer in the community, it also means the Northern Demons can get more use out of its upgraded and brilliant Byrne Park facilities.

Turci said previously the club would let the turf rest at the park once the winter soccer competition was completed.

Since the club has installed artificial turf at the grounds, the facility can be used all year without the worry of wear and tear on the surface.

“We’ve got this fantastic facility and we want to use it as much as we can,” he said.

“The new clubhouse is a bonus as well.”

Northern Demons have strived to make the competition as affordable as possible, especially for junior players.
