FIRE: A couch was on fire in a vacant house on Queen Street, causing damage internally and externally to the property.

Police and fire crews were called to a fire at a vacant house on Queen Street in the early hours of Tuesday morning, discovering a couch on fire in the driveway.

Neighbours called triple zero just before 1.30 am, noticing an orange flicker, a sounding alarm and the smell of smoke.

“I got woken up by the beeping and went and had a quick look to see what it was. I saw orange flashing through the window, I wandered out the front and saw an entire couch on fire”, one neighbour said.

The neighbours waited out the front for emergency services as the fire was only metres from their house, adjacent to the room their young son was sleeping in.

The fire caused external damage to the wall of the house and carport, in addition to smoke damage inside the house.

A person was seen running from the house moments before the smoke alarm was activated and police are treating the fire as suspicious.
