COMMITTEE: Stan Matthew, Brenton Clarke, Ray Walters and Karen Clarke are busy working ahead of the 2018 Smelter's Picnic.

More than 10,000 people are expected at this year’s Smelter’s Picnic, which will be held in Memorial Park for the second time in a row.

Last year was the first time Pirie’s favourite event was not held across Memorial Oval and acting picnic coordinator Ray Walters says that they received positive feedback in regards to the change.

“The picnic turned out to be magnificent. We will have no use of the oval from here on. There is no power available there for us as there was in previous years. The feedback that we got was actually that it was probably the best set up for a number of years”, Mr Walters said.

This year, there will not be any large changes occurring. But the committee have discussed several recommendations and changed the layout of the rides to avoid confusion.

“We are moving the free rides for the kids to down by the cathedral end, a more predominant area. There are some changes of the stalls predominately due to the power requirements, but not a lot will be different”, Mr Walters explained.

The committee have been working endlessly to ensure that this year’s picnic runs smoothly.

They have been talking to people, writing letters, inviting people, getting registrations, reading the ride act, setting up rules and regulations, in addition to completing risk assessments.

“There is a lot of work”, Mr Walters said, “council have been really good in that and have helped us out with a lot of the paper work side of it. It is a big job but I have a helpful committee. There are several people helping us out with the organising side of it.”

Ray decided to take up the job of acting picnic coordinator last year because as a traditionalist, he did not want to see the picnic disappear, so he put his hand up for the top job.

“I stepped up last year because it was picnic or no picnic and someone had to take on the role.”
