Nine competitors from Hip Hop Bounce attended the 2018 TFT School aerobics championships on the Gold Coast.

With this year the sixth time the school has attended the competition, they came away achieving much more than they set out for.

Coach and competitor Natasha English McCulloch said that their standards have improved a lot since they last attended the interstate championships.

Attending competitions in Adelaide and being able to learn from their state competitors, gives them a great advantage when they head to a national stage to perform.

“We went really well, it was probably our best performance at nationals, our standards have improved a lot and we were in big sections so there was a lot of competition. We did really well”, Natasha said.

“Even when there wasn’t a medal around someones neck, I still saw them perform the best they ever had. It did not matter how they did, they came off buzzing and proud. Of course it is always nice to hear your name called out when you have worked that hard, but there was a lot of pride even before we got to medal ceremonies.”

The Mid North team only entered solos and duos to give their students the opportunity to specialise in the fields that they enjoy, this included 100 per cent cheer, dance star, hip hop, jazz and lyrical.

Natasha explained that this competition was the pinnacle of competitions for their season, with each dancer having to qualify at states and then finals before they took to the stage on the Gold Coast.

Each dancer performed exceptionally well, and have been able to bring back a lot to their classes back in Pirie.

“They have definitely come back with a bit of fire. I have seen a lot of focus in class upon their return. It is good to see what they can do compared to others and seeing their confidence and they also get the motivation of seeing what else they might be able to do and what other people can do”, Natasha explained.

One of the dancers who attended the competition was Mia Williams and she said that she was really happy with how she performed.

“For lyrical auditions in the primary section, I got silver. For my cheer and chant I got third place. For my cheer and chant, I thought that we worked really hard and if we gave it the extra push that we could get into the top three, but I wasn’t expecting my lyrical”, she explained.

Mia is feeling confident going into the rest of the competition season and says that whilst away she learnt that she just has to go out on stage and give it your all and it does not matter what you come, as long as you had fun.

All the dancers will now be focusing on their team events which are coming up over the next few months.

They will compete in three major state finals in teams and several who will also be performing duos.
