Molfettese traditions will live on this week as the Port Pirie Italian Community holds its Blessing of the Fleet celebrations.
Three nights of services – a triduum – were held throughout the week and end on Thursday. Thursday’s 7.30pm mass is held after a 6.30pm candlelight procession from St Anthony’s Church to St Mark’s Cathedral.
On Saturday night, the Governor of South Australia will be the guest of honour at a debutante ball.
The festivities continue on Sunday with a high mass at St Mark’s Cathedral at 10.30am. A procession back to St Anthony’s is expected to start close to 12pm. The procession makes a stop at the boat ramp area at 1pm for the Blessing of the Fleet Festival with Italian food, stalls and entertainment on offer.
One of the highlights of the celebrations is the blessing of the water service which will take place close to 3pm with the statue to be conveyed on Oran Caputo’s boat ‘Oronzo’.
The procession back to St Anthony’s from the boat ramp should start at 4pm and will conclude at 4.30pm for benediction.
