A recipe for success

The Year 11 and 12 food and hospitality class from Mid North Christian School put on a three course meal for the Lions Club of Port Pirie’s 53rd birthday on Tuesday night.

The class provided two menu options at each course with soup and cannelloni for an entree, a chicken stack or roast beef for a main and chocolate mud cake or white chocolate mud cake for dessert.

Their teacher, Julie Dunkley who also teaches home economics in the school says that this assignment is the most intense for the SACE students.

“They have asked us about four years now and we have agreed to take it on as one of our SACE assignments. It is probably one of the most intense assignments for the year, it is good to have that amount of pressure for them”, Mrs Dunkley said.

The students will not only be marked on the taste and presentation of their food but how they work as a team under pressure.

“I am looking at not just the quality of their food but how they cope under pressure, how they work throughout the day as a team. I also look at how they contribute to helping the team”, she said.

“I will be looking at presentation, the plating up for a formal event. For instance for dessert they will serve it with special garnishing and coulis and we have edible flowers that they are going to use as well.”

“I am pretty confident but I get a bit nervous for them because I want them to do really well, especially because it is a paid event.”

“They do a feedback sheet and get some responses from the end of the night and I want them to be proud of what they have done.”

Sean Reid, a Year 11 student, was preparing and cooking the roast component of the meal and said that he would not let the pressure get to him.

“It is just taking it on head first and not letting the pressure get to you.”

“There have not been many challenges so far as I have been working really productively with my partner Michael and it is turning out really well. Our concerns are the timing of the roast”, Sean explained.

On the night, the students participated in singing happy birthday to the Lions.
