Cats’ opening win on the road

Solomontown 12.8.80

Central 10.9.69

Solomontown were well-pleased to ease into season 2018 with a nervy win on the road against the fast finishing Bloods in Port Augusta.

There were a few that have moved on from last season but also a couple of ins with Nitscke making his debut plus returning players in Bryce Pretty plus Riley Hayes after five years downtown.

Again, another low scoring tight first half saw Central take a three-point lead into the break before Sollies made their move in the third after an early Bloods goal to score five-in-a-row to set up a handy 25 point lead into the final stanza.

Central closed fast to get to within a kick twice before Sollies were able to close out as winners with a Joe Caputo goal late in a tight nervy finish in a high scoring last quarter.

The big men for Sollies were a feature with Muller getting best plus Bernhardt chimed in with three goals and the Hayes cousins Jonno and Riley both starring.

For Central, Brendan Colson took up where he left off last year albeit in different colours with four goals and Braden Allen also starred in his first game back for the Bloods colours for five years.

Cats by 11 points – Central 10.9.69 def by Solomontown 12.8.80.

Westies demolished by South

South 24.13.157

West 6.7.43

West Augusta started the season in the worst possible fashion via the reigning premiers South as they start their journey in search of a treble.

It was pretty even at four goals each at quarter-time but after that it was two goals to 20!

Things look ominous for opposition sides with diminutive Aboriginal stars in Clayton Milera dominating proceedings and Lionel Brown bagging six on his return to SGL footy from Broken Hill, very hard to stop.

South by 114 points – West 6.7.43 def by South 24.13.157.
