Kmart officially launched their 30th year of the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal on Wednesday, partnering with Uniting Country SA to support members of the community in need.
The appeal has grown significantly since the first launch in 1987 and the Port Pirie community has shown their dedication to helping families in the region who are not always able to put presents under the tree.
Since the Port Pirie store have first participated in the appeal launch, they have raised 15,000 gifts and last year raised 724 gifts.
Alisa Vilcins, the store manager says the store is already on target to beat last year’s donations and reach their goal of 900 presents.
“We are already a third of the way there as Rennae, a store assistant has already raised 300 gifts.”
“Everything raised will stay within Port Pirie and we wanted to have a launch so customers and the community know that they can donate”, Alisa said.
The idea of a wishing tree began when a team member suggested Kmart use their stores as gift collection points to assist charities at Christmas.
There are several ways to donate; presents can be placed underneath the tree at Centro Shopping Centre or donations can be made at every register in store.
