As little hands made the most of craft activities at the Port Pirie West Children’s Centre on Wednesday, an adult helping hand was never far away.
And nor was a beaming smile. For about 50 children and parents the playgroup, which marked celebrations as a part of National Families Week, provided the perfect opportunity to reflect and build upon the family connections which support us from the very beginning of our lives.
The playgroup saw a special family photo booth installed, along with a family tree and hand-printing craft activities.
Port Pirie West Children’s Centre community development coordinator Ebony Roberts said the week and playgroup were important steps in acknowledging the importance of family.
“Families Week is all about celebrating the importance of families and families of all different structures,” Ebony said.
She said the event helped new parents to make friends in the local community.
“A community is also a family,” she said.
“It is also about getting know other people in the community and relating to them.
“We encourage people to remember that it takes not only a family to raise a child, but it also takes a village to raise a child.
“Everyone can support a child’s development.”
Port Pirie West Children’s Centre volunteer of three years, Barbara Caputo, said every playgroup was special.
“It is the highlight of my week,” Barbara said.
She said the families week celebrations were particularly enjoyable.
“It is just beautiful,” she said.
“I will go home with a smile on my face, like I do every week.”
