Red-hot Demons triumph

The Northern Demons have followed-up their round 2 narrow home league win and its big FFA cup-tie win with a third straight victory when it defeated new team Adelaide University 1-0 in the city on a perfect Saturday afternoon, sending the Andrew McMillan undefeated coached Reds into third place on the State League 2 ladder.

It was another narrow Northern Demons 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon that only adds to the Reds’ confidence whereas the undefeated tag in this first month of soccer in all competitions gives first year Byrne Park mentor McMillan an impressive kind of start as well as proving the locals have improved from last season.

The active league ladder sees an evenly bunched quartet of teams all on 7 points with the Adelaide Cobras on top after an 8-2 demolition job against Uni SA followed by Playford City, the Demons and the Vipers completing the early season top four. The Demons played a fit and hard working opponent on a small pitch that suited the University Blacks team against the visitors in last Saturday’s round 3 league game but one that the Demons seemed to starve the home team from any genuine dangerous offensive soccer in what developed into a very competitive hit-out.

Last Saturday the Demons could not play new recruit Marco Balsamo, but welcomed back Chris Mara into the Reds team that went 1-0 up at the 17th minute mark courtesy of a James Capurso finish from a low cross from the wing. The Demons seemed to be on top of the Adelaide University combination and should have led 2-0 entering the halftime break if not for a missed Reds penalty that was well-saved from the Chris Mara spot kick giving the Blacks a chance to fire in the second period.

In the meantime the early Capurso goal and the fabric of the Demons pursuit saw the Reds control the contest at the oval venue where just the one goal was enough for all three ladder points. The Capurso brothers both played well as did Chris Annese but it was young Daniel Lobasso that got the main best players votes from coach Andrew McMillan for last Saturday’s game.

Best players – D.Lobasso, C.Annese, J.Capurso, Jay Capurso. Goal scorer – James Capurso.

Reserves and U18s

The Northern Demons Reserves won easily on Saturday afternoon when it strolled away from Adelaide University team to win 6-0 in a strong performance by the visiting Reds, whereas the Under 18s were left idle with the home team not fielding a young team in its first season in the competition. The Demons had multiple goals scorers with Samuel Spadevecchia scoring three, Peter Capurso got two and returning Demons player Andrew Cox getting one. And for the Demons it will be a repeat performance this Saturday when the two teams meet in their cup game, this time the locals hosting the Blacks.
