A scene of chaos in Three Chain Road last Wednesday night created an air of mystery in the town.
Seven police cars and one ambulance van were parked within a confined area that had been cordoned off by police.
Onlookers observed as a woman, “looking shaken” came out of the house and was looked after police.
Rumours of guns, a knife, a hostage and domestic dispute circulated among the 20 people at the scene about what may be happening.
But no-one was quite sure.
The Recorder saw a man, who was not wearing a shirt, emerge from a home.
He was taken away by ambulance on a stretcher.
And then, the police cars drove away and it was clear to everyone that the scene was now safe.
Detective Gavin Mildrum said police had attended the scene after being advised by the public that there was a man in an aggravated state with a knife.
Upon arriving at house, police set up a perimeter around the scene and established that the man “may have been harming himself”.
“It is common practice, if anyone has a knife, that the scene will be contained to prevent injury to the public, suspect and police officers,” he said.
The man’s partner, a woman occupant of the premises, walked out of the house after talking to police.
