Favours needed to fill tennis teams

30 Jan, 2012 01:48 PM
Wandearah B grade men had to call in a few favours from past players as normal B grade players stepped up into A grade to help cover absences.

Damien Freer played his second match and Michael Crouch returned after quite a few years absence in this division.

Freer filled in at number one singles and had a hard-fought match against Brenton Holmes, who walked off the court the winner.

Michael Crouch teamed up with young Samuel Ferme and showed him how to be a net player.

They won their doubles match against Dave Hawkins and Allan Munn 6-4 but Crouch narrowly lost his single in a tie-breaker against Allan Munn.

Meanwhile Anne Franks and upcoming junior Brittany Yarrow defeated the mother/daughter combination in Michelle and Lucy Wood 6-4.

Napperby Blue came away with the win 11 sets to five.

You can see what a difference a few kilometres make.

The matches at Napperby were delayed due to rain, while the matches in Port Pirie and at Wandearah were played with no weather delays at all.

Another B grade match played between Trinity and Napperby Gold was a close encounter, with the young Trinity team winning by just one game.

The score was even after the doubles had been played at two sets and five games a piece.

The young kids for Trinity had the upper hand heading into the mixed doubles with a two set lead.

However, Napperby fought back winning three out of the four mixed doubles, but finally missing out by one game.

Trinity’s Danielle Wright won all three of her matches.

Gavin Zani did his part for Napperby Gold winning his three sets also.

The final B grade match played between Railway Pennant against Risdon Uniting, saw Railway winning nine sets to seven.

Fraser Collins had another close singles match this week, losing 7-6 to Huey Oxford.

There were some good A grade games this week with Wandearah notching up its second consecutive win against Risdon Uniting.

Napperby defeated Railway seven rubbers to five.

Wandearah got off to a good start winning three of the four doubles, losing only the top men’s double with David McInerney and Kane Bowley beating Dennis Buchanan and Dom Keain 6-1, 6-1.

Neville Hunt filled in for Wandearah A grade and came away with both his sets.

Wandearah won all of the ladies’ singles, with Kim Schuller having a tough game against Rachael Tubb - winning 6-4.

For Napperby Brodie Mudge had a good game defeating Greg Phillips 6-3.

Railway’s Dylan Adams continued his good form winning 6-2 against Nick Donnellan.

In the division one doubles Railway Gold lost to Nurom Railway w- four sets to two.

Vicki Crouch did her part for the team winning all of her sets.

Railway’s Geoff Vincent won two of his three losing to Geoff Kirby and Vicki Crouch 6-3.

In division two doubles Railway Black was back to its best defeating Trinity.

Railway Blue was too good for Napperby.

Paul Dibbens and Karen Seindanis had a good hit against Dave Phillips and Cameron Trenowden winning 6-4.
