Blue firm as favourites

25 Jan, 2012 01:47 PM
It’s time to get out on court again tomorrow night after another week of watching tennis on TV in Melbourne.

This year’s Aussie Open has certainly been packed with interest, and tennis has once again swept the nation off its feet.

No doubt Port Pirie’s rising stars Kurtis Willson, 15, and Daniel Hobart, 13, will have taken a keen interest in the event.

If they continue to work hard and continue on the right path, they may even hit the big stage one day themselves. You just never know.

On the local scene, it’s back to business tomorrow night in the lead up to finals with just six rounds to go.

Last week’s surprise winners in A grade, Wandearah will face up to Risdon Uniting, which is fresh from a big win against Trinity in round 10.

Much will depend on who is playing on the night.

If Uniting front up with McInerney, Bowley, Bell and Leal for the men’s sets, it will be a tough assignment for Wandearah.

Kimberly Schuller played well to extend Katelyn Mudge last week.

If Schuller can produce the same form she will also push Kathy Gould tomorrow night, assuming both players are available.

Railway Pennant will play its first match since December 16, and won’t get things easy either with Napperby a quality opponent.

Alyse Palmer may be able to play just a few more matches for Railway this season, before she takes off again to Europe late February.

Railway’s Amanda Nuttall, Lisa McMahon and junior players Dylan Adams and Thomas Dickeson hold the key to its chances this week.

Napperby Blue cemented its place at the top of the B grade competition with a whopping 15 sets to one victory against sister side Napperby Gold on Friday night.

It will be a tough ask for Wandearah to beat Napperby Blue, which has a cracker of a team – Brenton Holmes (1), Todd Yarrow (2), Blake Morrell (3), Alan Munn (4), Julie Mudge (1), Joanne Seyfang (2), Jessica Meyers (3), and Joanne Noble (4).

Napperby Blue would have to be the outright favorites for this year’s premiership following last week’s big win.

To the Club Doubles and Railway Gold appear to be travelling nicely at this stage of the season in division one, with a team of Geoff Vincent, Pat McMahon, Liz Dunkley, Heather Brook and Monica O’Shea.

Nurom Railway will provide a challenge this week for Railway Gold, with Geoff Kirby, Vicki Crouch, Kerry Evans and Sharon Seidel the possible foursome to front up this week.

Railway Blue should return to the courts this week against Napperby in Club Doubles division two, after a spell last week due to the Tour Down Under.

Paul Dibbens, Karen Seindanis, Moira Coffey and an unknown substitute player will start favorites in the match to be played at the tennis centre on courts 8 and 18.
