Pirie take full points

24 Jan, 2012 08:26 AM
The Port Pirie Bowling Club’s division one side soundly defeated Peterborough 107/78 in Saturday’s 13th round of the North Western Bowling Association 2011/12 season.

Although still sitting in second place behind BHAS the result of this match has reduced the margin behind the leaders, which Pirie meets in next week’s round to just six points 286 to 280.

All four rinks enjoyed success against the visitors.

David Manuel, Phil Siviour, Peter Orvad and Ian Harvey can boast the highest winning margin against Cary Brakenbridge.

Harvey led 9/1 after just four ends, but allowed the opposition nine shots and trailed by one after eight.

However, from then on it was all Pirie as they sped away to establish unassailable 18-shots result 35/17.

Dennis Cundy led Gordon Kroschel, John Rafanelli, Andy Hern and Kenton Franks by six shots after just five ends.

Although the Pirie rink rallied and crept to a two-shot break after eight it still went into the tea break down 10/14.

It was a totally different Pirie combination that returned to the green.

During the second half of the match they turned on the power and almost extinguished any opportunity for Peterborough to score before going on to record a 29/20 result.

The scorecard indicated a very tight match between the Peterborough rink, skippered by Phil Summers, against Pirie’s Les Colman, Evan Kroschel, Ken Connor and Stephen Lynch.

Apart from a three to Summers on the14th end both teams were restricted to just one scoring shot each end, during the remainder of the match in which Lynch held on to win 17/16.

The second close result for the day involved Tony Amato, Fred Searle, Leon Sampson and Brian Siviour against Don Burnell.

Siviour held a two-shot advantage against with four ends remaining and had to hold off a strong challenge from the visitors before ending the day up by just one shot 26/25.

Pirie’s division two side went off to Wirrabara where rumours of a heavy green were unfounded.

Although a bit patchy, the green did not have much influence on the result of the match.

Ladder leaders’ Pirie were defeated by the eighth-placed Wirrabara side 81/87.

The loss did not cost Pirie its top position on the premiership table, but it now only leads second placed BHAS by just overall shots on the ladder.

Caleb Connor, Peter Fidda-man, Kevin Connor and Warren Johns had to come from well behind to win 23/16 against Grant Taylor.

Trailing 9/13 at the break Johns kept Taylor to singles while accumulating handy multiple scores during the second half and finished the day up 23/16.

Max Hollitt had his hands full against Rob Peacock.

Hollitt led by three midway through the first half, only to see his lead whittled away during the remainder of the afternoon and turn into an 18/25 loss.

Michael Baldock, Greg Bur-ton, Brian Stephens and Trevor Summers lost by seven shots.

Leading by nine shots after five ends, and seemingly in control, the Pirie rink hit a brick wall and was one down at tea and seven down 22/29 at stumps.

Compliments to the opposition are usually hard to come by in my column but, to give credit where credit is due, one could only stand back and admire the skills of Ian Chesters, Eric Dagger, Jon Emery and John Tenney who, as a team pulled off some remarkable bowling shots.

That allowed them to convert end after end to their advantage and demonstrate a standard much higher than that expected of second division bowlers.

In division three, Pirie Red played at the Gladstone Club and lost to the hosts 57/77.

Pirie Blue fared better at home to Jamestown.

Kelly Coe, Brian Condon, Clare Flavel and Cath Searle scraped in by one against D Dempsey 21/20.

Danny Murphy, Bill Gorman, Rita Higginson and Peter McGrory doubled Les Messenger’s score 30/15.

Doug Key lost by five shots against C Keahne 17/22.
