There was a standing ovation for one of the most popular players in the Port Pirie Netball Association when Blue Wrens dynamic centre Bec Adams was announced the 2010 ‘Player of the Year.
Adam’s is the epitome of the award, not only was she judged the best but is known to be the fairest, a no nonsense player who gets on with the game, never questioning.
This is Adam’s second ‘Player of the Year’ award, winning her first in 2006 playing at goal attack and she said she was thrilled with the announcement.
“I did not give myself a chance because I didn’t think I stood out,” she said. “I was excited with the win in 2006 but I was strongly tipped and thought I may win.”
The talented player started her netball career playing with Airdale School, then after a stint with Centrals she transferred to Blue Wrens.
Adams has played in two A grade premierships with her club and is hoping for a third as Blue Wrens have won its way straight into the grand final.
History says that many winners of the coveted award go on to win a premiership the same year.
Adams daughter Tiah, who is nearly seven, played ‘Net Set Go’ in 2009 but chose to play soccer this year.
She will be eligible to play netball next season and Adams said she would love to one day play A grade with her; emulating Nadinne and Chloe Knibbs, the mother and daughter duo who play in the Chequers A grade team.
“I don’t think it will happen because I probably won’t be playing then,” Adams said.
Chances are it will.
Adams at 30 should have a good ten years left gracing the courts and if Tiah follows her mother’s talents, she will likely be playing A grade within the next ten years.
Runner up to Adams who had 27 votes was Port’s Chloe Willersdorf with 26.
Chequers talented Chloe Knibbs won the rising star award.
