Port Pirie Bowling Club’s division one and two teams recorded wins on Saturday, while the two division two teams both lost.
It made for mixed results for Pirie during Saturday’s 12th round of the North Western Bowling Association’s Saturday Pennant Competition.
The division one side travelled just down the highway to the Port Germein greens where they defeated the home side 108/89.
Ken Dohnt, Phil Siviour, Peter Orvad and Ian Harvey would be disappointed with their result against Neville Leue as they grafted a good seven shot lead after 13 ends and looked set for a win.
However, not to be denied Germein’s champion put paid to the anticipated result with a devastating 19 shots to three during the business end of the game to engineer a six-shot margin for his club 34/28.
Tony Amato, Fred Searle, Leon Sampson and Brian Siviour kept Joe Perovic quiet as they stole the show during the second half of the match, scoring 19 shots to six ensuring a comprehensive result in Pirie’s favour 29/18.
Only one shot separated Gordon Kroschel, John Rafanelli, Andy Hern and Kenton Franks against the Robin Pole combination.
Pole’s scoring opportunities were kept to a minimum on the run home allowing Franks a winning 28/16 result at the close of play.
Kevin Mudge did not intend to do Les Colman, Evan Kroschel, Lance Leak and Stephen Lynch any favours and took his visitors in to tea three shots up.
Given time to consider their early performance during the break Lynch’s rink came out firing and scored on the next six ends - giving them a lead they could protect during the remaining ends and achieve a 23/21 result.
The last time Pirie was opposed to Caltowie the Caltowie greens were very heavy, slowed down by the spring rains, and Pirie just managed to scrape in with a two rink win and a four shot margin.
Given the prospects of a free running green at home it was felt Pirie should take out the points on Saturday.
Albeit it seems nobody had told the Caltowie side of the expected result, as they again took four of the available pennant points similar to the last time they met.
However, Pirie increased the overall winning margin to 18 shots - 109/91.
Michael Baldock, Mathew Traeger, Brian Stephens and Trevor Summers were looking for somewhere to hide when the scorecard read 2/18 after just seven ends against Colin Black.
A three on the eighth end finally enabled the rink to recover their poise but they still trailed by 10 shots when the sides went to tea.
Following tea it was all Pirie, as the score went from 14/24 to 24/26 with one end remaining.
However, in the last gasp one bowl on the last end fell just two shots short, and gave victory to Black 23/25.
Max Hollitt, the hero in the last encounter at Caltowie, could not reproduce the goods against John Malone and went down 15/25.
David Manuel, Peter Fiddaman, Kevin Connor and Warren Johns, although dropping a nasty five early in the game, had too many guns for Jim Tyas scoring 27 shots to 11 in the first half alone.
They went on to take a substantial victory 41/21.
Scores were close when Barry Atkins, Leon Conder, John Jones and Des Laube took Trevor Crawford’s rink in to tea.
However, on the resumption of play Laube ruled the roost, with multiple scoring ends to finish the day with a satisfying result 28/19.
Unfortunately there were not very good results for Pirie’s division three sides on Saturday.
Pirie Red at home went down 55/84 to BHAS and Pirie Blue, who travelled to Booleroo Centre, lost by just two shots 71/73.
