Stadium will come alive for A1 netball matches

07 May, 2009 12:56 PM
Friday night starts the first of many A1 games to be played in the John Pirie Stadium. The A1 players love the conditions in the stadium and the first match promises to be one not to be missed.

Last season premiers Blue Wren, fresh off a convincing win over Central last Saturday, will be up against Port who pulled off a tight 1 goal win over Celtic.

Blue Wren have the luxury of no changes to their line up from last season however coach Vanessa Magor wont have prior knowledge of the match up with the newcomers to the Port team.

Wrens elusive shooter in Vianna Fasciana is always a handful for the keepers with her quick movement and accurate passing however the height and defensive work of Chloe Willersdorf could prove a problem particularly on the shot at goal.

An exciting match up not to miss will between Brooke George, last season’s players of the year and Chloe Joyce who played an amazing defensive game last Saturday.

These two players are dynamic young talents and are huge contributors to their respective teams.

It will be youth versus experience as Hollie Joyce, wing defence for Port matches it with Bec Adams and we all know that Bec has the capability to blow a game apart. The height and close checking of Hollie really worried Rachel Tubb last week and Hollie will be intent on making life difficult for Adams.

Liz Promnitz puts in a consistent game every week at centre and she will be tested this week by Jen Thomas for Port. These two players play a very similar style of game and the winner of this position will have a real impact on the result of the game.

Ports wing attack, Kate Lavis will need to play a strong and controlled game to keep her opponent, Abbey Lambert at bay, as Abbey has a go on every ball and is capable of many turnovers through the centre area.

Jess Dunkley is a welcome return to the Port team and she is up against Ashe McCarthy who puts in a solid game each week and cuts down space in the ring, however Dunkley could prove a handful with her quick movement and accurate shot on goal.

Tracie Hawkins, who enjoyed a brilliant season last year, will match up on Hayley Combe who is an underrated player and Hawkins won’t want to take her lightly as she finds space and enjoys a high shooting percentage.

The Port goalies will need to keep the ball moving quickly and be aware of the long arms and blocking ability of Hawkins and McCarthy.

This match at 6.30pm Friday night will be a great spectacle of skills and fitness and is one to mark down in the diary.
