Port captain expects a gruelling match against Central Augusta

The bulldogs are ready to tear strips off the bloods this weekend.

With back-to-back premierships on the line, Port coach Donny Depalma will be demanding four quarters of intense football from every player.

“A second rate effort will not be accepted,” said captain Andrew Fleming.

With seven premierships in 11 years, there is a winning culture in the club and Fleming said the supporters and members would be expecting a win.

“The players thrive on those expectations,” he said.

“It will take a monumental team effort and four quarters to beat Centrals.”

Port finished on top in the minor round, but conceded two games to Centrals.

“We need a gusty performance from Michael Burford in the ruck,” Fleming said.

“And Norm Wombat will have to show the way for the younger midfielders.

“This game will be won and lost in the mid field.

“It will be up to our midfielders to force stoppages, clear the ball, create drive and get the ball to the forwards.”

He said it would also be important for the coach to get the match-ups right to give the Bulldogs the upper hand.

“We have won premierships before, but this will be tough,” he said.

“They have a really good side.”

The blend of youth and experience will be an asset to Port as they draw spirit from each other and try and get themselves across the line.

“This is going to be a tough game, I cannot stress that enough,” Fleming said.

“This will be our hardest game all year and a big test for us.”
