The 2008 SGL football season kicks off this weekend with Nelson Magor and Jonathan Haynes ready to debut at the top local level.
Both young players are eager to make their mark on the SGL this season with Haynes joining the Lions from Interstate and home grown talent Magor moving up the ranks with Sollies.
The 23-year-old Lions recruit moved to Port Pirie about two months ago from Tasmania on a transfer with Nyrstar as a mechanical engineer .
And even though it is his first time playing football, it looks like he could be chosen as part of the A grade squad.
“I haven’t played footy before except for a season in grade eight,” he admitted.
But his skills as a rugby player and State 800m runner should transfer onto the football field.
“Learning the skills and knowing where to be on the field is what I need to work on,” he said.
He has been playing in ruck during trial games so far this
season and has kicked a few goals but said his kicking technique needs a bit of work.
“I like physical sport and there is no rugby union here so I thought I would play footy,” he said.
And he likes life in Pirie saying people have been friendly and he enjoys training with the Lions team.
In the Sollies camp, 15-year-old Magor is eager to move up to League football and said he will have to adapt to playing with
bigger and stronger players.
“I think I will have to get used to the speed of the game and the high level of skills,” he said.
Magor has been playing for Sollies since he was 9 and said along with Trent Hoare he is the youngest player trying to break into the top team.
“There are a few young guys trying to get a spot in A-grade,” he said.
The squad has not been finalised yet and Magor said his coach told him to get selected he needed to “just keep training hard.”
But the young centre half back admitted he needs to work on his left foot kick.
He is confident Sollies will improve on last season and is looking forward to the first match.
“We should definitely do better this year,” he said.
