Lions meet Central Augusta in Port Augusta this Sunday. Centrals comfortably defeated Lions at their last meeting.
When Lions were in Port Augusta last they caused an upset by downing West Augusta. Since then Lions have only beaten winless Solomontown, while opponent Central Augusta has won three in a row.
Central Augusta has certainly turned their form around after an inconsistent start to the season and is now in a position to be a legitimate challenge to Port. They are playing confidently and have a number of versatile and quality players.
Lions on the other hand are struggling to put four quarters of sustained football together. Greater consistency is essential if teams of the calibre of Central Augusta are not only challenged but also defeated.
There is no doubting the potential of the Lion’s team. The young Lions in Cam Pine, Tyson Horsnell, Tyron George, Michael Lagoudis and Brad Pine have all had their moments so far this season. They will all need to fire together to threaten the experienced Central Augusta line up.
Centrals have been able to settle their side into a formidable combination capable of challenging the best in the competition.
The height, in particular, of players like Shane Curnow, Anthony Ruffles, Mark Fuller, etc tested Lions in the past and will do so again. Lions will need to use its pace and fitness in an attempt to exploit Centrals perceived that lack of mobility.
Two time Madigan Medallist Matt Keatley is damaging as ever. Andrew Williams, Nick Callary, Sean Dawson and Ben Yoemans are among a number of players that continue to make valuable contributions and will test the Lions defence.
These are supported by an experienced combination of Mark Fuller and Daniel Baker. The reliable and experienced Ashley Fullerton will lead the defence. In attack there are a number of options with key forward Anthony Ruffles (25 goals) the main focus ably supported by Shannon Wilson, Shane Curnow and others.
Lions’ Jonathon Haynes return will bolster the ruck and add much needed height to the side. He will provide support for the increasingly impressive Brad Ley. At the last meeting with Centrals this combination more than held their own.
Chris Marsland was outstanding last week and he will have a key role in countering the influence of Central’s Matt Keatley. This is one of many key contests which will determine the outcome of the match.
Central Augusta will start favorite based on present form. Lions have the task ahead of them but with four quarters of concentrated effort they could surprise.
