The Murphy name is synonomous to the Port Football Club, a family that has given years of service, played in multiple premierships and broken records.
The latest to break a record is John Murphy who has an enviable list of achievements.
He, along with his father Peter, a former Port champion, are the only father and son players in the Port Football Club who have each amassed 200 league games.
They have totalled 15 league premierships between them; Peter has played in nine and John in six.
Murphy played his 300th club game against Solomontown on 26th July; with his team making it a memorable day beating their arch rivals 33-16 to 2-5.
He now joins Port players Jamie Keane, Noel Grenfell, Graham Hoile, Graeme Bell and Grant Tubb in the elite ‘300 games club’.
The unassuming player who is known for his consistency also played for Gladstone in 1995 and 1996. During that time he played in a losing A grade grand final and won an A grade Best and Fairest.
Murphy started playing football for Port in 1987 and has played 213 league games and 87 seconds games.
Six league premiership medals were hung around his neck in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004 and two for the seconds in 1989 and 1994.
Murphy who is the current second’s captain has held this duty for the past three years, although during this time he has played several matches in the league side under past team-mate, now A grade coach Donny DePalma.
DePalma has nothing but praise and admiration for Murphy.
“He is a fantastic team player who plays hard to the ball and gives his all,” he said.
“John leads by example and his actions speak highly of him.”
DePalma said that Murphy was a dedicated and committed clubman, not only on the field but also in the organisation of players trips and functions.
In recent years the Port Football Club have honored him with a life membership and he is also a life member of the Spencer Gulf League.
Murphy’s wife Robyn was at the match to witness his 300th game and his sons Deakin and Jamison proudly ran through the banner to the cheers from his teammates and supporters.
