Port Football Club champion Jamie McNamara played his 300th SGL League game recently, putting his name in the history books.
Most of the 300 games have been with Port, but McNamara played two seasons with Central Augusta in 1991 and 1992 and has also played some SGL combined games. McNamara has played in seven SGL premierships, six with Port and one with Central Augusta and is a six-time
premiership captain at Port and furthermore has captained the club for a record 11 seasons. He has carried the nickname of “Captain Courageous” known for his courage and his fearless hard attack on the ball.
McNamara is one of the most respected players in the Spencer Gulf League.
Meanwhile Port player Matt Cox played his 200th league game for Port and the SGL last weekend. Cox is an eight time Port A grade premiership
player; one short of the club record of nine premierships held by past Port champion Peter Murphy.
PHOTO: GREAT ACHIEVEMENT...Jamie McNamara, 300 SGL games, and Matt Cox, 200 SGL games, are carried off the ground in round two of SGL football at Memorial Oval, by fellow Port players. In a fitting gesture, McNamara and Cox were given a guard of honor by both the Port and Solly players.
The tough back man made his debut at age 19 in 1997 when Port won its first senior premiership in 27 years.
Cox who has played in 12 A grade grand-finals has claimed that his first premiership was the best but put the 2008 premiership thriller “up there”.
