FOOTBALL: On Saturday the first of the games for 2009 between Port Pirie and Port Augusta teams will be played at Memorial Oval between Solomontown and South Augusta.
The Bulldogs have started the season in tremendous form with a narrow loss to West Augusta in round one and a huge victory over Central Augusta by 54 points last weekend. Solomontown, on the other hand, have suffered significant
losses to Port and Lions in their first two outings.
South Augusta has unearthed a talent in youngster Kahran McKenzie who is still eligible for U18’s and his performances to start the season would be pleasing to all South supporters. He registered a best on ground performance against Centrals and his pace will be something Solomontown will need to contain right from the start of this weeks match.
Todd Kernahan has continued his good goal kicking form from last season by being South Augusta’s dominant scorer with 7 goals from 2 matches.
His combination with CHF Simon Brushnahan, gives the Bulldogs a strong forward setup. Add to the mix, Darren Shillabeer returning from Norwood, at Centre Half Back and South Augusta appears to have too much strength for the Cats.
Solomontown showed glimpses of form last week against Lions, but did not handle the night conditions at all well.
Their supporters will be hoping that the return to Saturday afternoon will suit the players better.
Ruckmen Craig Tee, in his first game for 12 months after missing round one, was Solomontown’s best player and his duel with Brock Laube will be a highlight.
Full Forward Brendan Nicklaus is a very accurate kick for goal and he registered 5 of the sides 7 goals last week. He will need a lot more support from the other forwards to enable Solomontown to kick a competitive total.
Solomontown’s second quarter against Lions was close to what Bob Boston would be expecting from his side, but the play they served up in the other three quarters would not have impressed him in the least.
The ball disposal and decision making was below par from what is expected at league level.
There are enough senior players in the side, along with quite a few youngsters, for the Cats to be more competitive than they have been to date. Jarrad Davies, Marc Scollin, Craig Tee, Matt Turner and new signing Graham Cooke will be called on to lead the way and second year players like Lindsay Bearman, James Moyse and Brendan Schutte need to take the next step to become consistent league players.
On form South Augusta appear to have too many guns for Solomontown, but should the Cats players listen, understand and adapt to Bob Boston’s game plan then this could be a very even match.
