Premierships are the icing on the cake for many a sportsperson, and for Adam Wilson, victory in Saturday’s SGL football final was as good as it gets in country sport.
Port got up in the dying minutes of the game to win the grand final against Central Augusta by one point in front of a crowd of about 4,500 people at Memorial Oval.
Local primary school teacher, Adam Wilson first started playing football as a young teenager.
It all started when he was a school student in Year 12 and he kicked the football around with mates.
Wilson joined the West Gambier Football Club and then went on to play for Adelaide University in the amateur league.
It is his second year living in Port Pirie and also playing for Port and he says he loves it here.
Unfortunately he missed a grand final last year because he broke a bone in his foot.
However, this year is quite a different story with Wilson involved in the match winning move on Saturday that saw Port claim the SGL flag for the 2008 season in thrilling circumstances.
Wilson marked and accurately kicked the ball to Norm Wombat in the goal square who then went on to kick the winning goal in the last minute of play.
He said winning the grand final last weekend was one of the proudest moments in his sporting life.
The dedicated football champion has remained passionate about the sport and loves being a
member of the Port Football Club.
“Port look after their players well,” Wilson said.
The PE teacher at Pirie West Primary said last weekend’s grand final was a tough game and that Central’s unsportsmanlike conduct after the game finished was “a real disappointment”.
Central Augusta players left the oval before the presentation was made by the SGL league officials to the Port team.
Wilson, who earned his way back into the league team later in the season, has a lot of respect for Port coach Don DePalma who he says is highly regarded at the club.
“Donny has been a big influence and he has been a big support to me with my footy here in Pirie,” Wilson said.
Meanwhile, Adam Wilson will swap footy boots for a tennis racquet this summer and he will line up in a social team to contest the new men’s Friday night competition due to start on October 11 at the Port Pirie Tennis Centre.
