Tyrone wins Madigan Medal while the Lions bask in winning glory

02 Sep, 2010 01:18 PM
Madigan Medal with South Augusta’s Ryan Struck.

The centreman has ended his first year of football with the Cats on a high. He also wins The Recorder Medal.

Price and Tyrone tied for the medal on 18 points.

Sollies coach Bob Boston was proud of Price’s success and described him as a “good bloke and a good player”.

“Working in Roxby Downs, he travels three hours to play football with us,” he said.

“He has shown a commitment to the game.”

Boston said Price had started off his time with the season well.

“He really came good in the last six to seven games,” he said.

“He is very consistent and has a high standard of play.”

Price was a late recruit for the team, joining the side in March this year, just before the season began. He played football in Roxby Downs before joining the SGL.

Boston said he was always on the ball.

“He gets his own ball,” he said. “He’s hard at it and an outstanding mark for his size.”

He said he kicked good, long goals.

“Price tackles well and plays without fear,” he said.

“He has the ability to dodge and weave and is a good all-round player.”

Boston described Price as an inspiration to the other players.

“He’s a humble person,” he said.

“The club is happy to have him as part of our team.”

He said the club’s spirits had been further lifted after having a rough few years.

With Sollies just missing out on semi-finals by .23 percent and a Madigan Medal win, perhaps next year they will go from strength to strength.

Lions have led the way in the count for local medals.

With Levi Goodridge winning the Munro Medal, Luke Patterson taking the Allchurch Medal and Dylan Butler winning the Scott Medal, the team has gone from strength to strength.

League player Dean Steele was just six points shy from winning the Madigan Medal and placed fourth in the count.

Goodridge was presented with the Dyason Medal on Monday, with 18 votes, and Butler was a high-scorer for the Bishop Medal having 32 votes.

Bishop Medal runner-up and exceptional young Port footballer Jake Bullen trailed Butler, finishing with 13 votes.

Under 13s rising star Alexa-nder Young, from Port, took home the Yates Medal, with 21 votes.

Lions Luke Patterson was three points ahead of Sollies Jonothan Hayes for the Allchurch Medal, at 28 points compared to Hayes’ 25 votes.

Chairman of the Port Pirie Junior Football Association Les Promnitz said Lions’ good season across a number of grades had led to their success.

“The players that won the medals were in among the favorites,” he said.

“Lions polled very well.”

He said a lot of colts were trying their hand at League football, using Dylan Butler as an example. “He has played every game for the season,” he said.

“He was expected to poll well but we thought he margin might have been a bit closer.”

League medals were presented on Monday night in Port Augusta, and the local medals will be presented this weekend.

Lions will be hoping to continue with their winning-streak this weekend in their semi-final against Central Augusta.

Promnitz said it should be a good game.

“I think they could beat Centrals,” he said.
