The winner of the 2010 Yates Medal for the best and fairest under 13 player in Port Pirie Junior Football Association is Port player Alexander Young.
Alexander was a clear winner of the award – with 24 votes – well in front of joint runners-up Tyler Athanasos (Port) and Corey Davey (Solomontown), who both polled 15 votes.
Port players were three of the four highest vote getters at Tuesday night’s count, with Mitchell Stewart next on 13 votes.
However, Alexander, while expecting to gain a few votes, did not expect to win.
“I thought other people would win like Corey Davey or Cain Pisani,” Alexander said.
His aims in football are “to be a good team person” and “to win the grand final”.
He will captain Port in the grand final tomorrow night and reckons they “will win” against Sollies.
Alexander believed he won the medal because he is “just playing with a good team”.
He has played football since he was about eight-years-old and credits his coaches during that time for helping him to improve his game.
Port under 13 coach Paul Keane praised the young centre-half-forward’s work rate, playing ability and leadership qualities.
“Alexander’s year has been exceptional,” Keane said.
“He is the captain of our under 13 side and he has led by example all year.
“He has a very strong mark, his work rate is very good and he presents himself around the ground all the time.
“His attack on the ball is relentless. His leadership and his attitude and his total leadership of the group has been outstanding.”
Alexander is the son of Marcus and Wendy Farrugia.
