Both AFL stars Kurt Tippett and Dean Brogan played basketball as juniors. In fact, Brogan played in the 1998 Adelaide 36ers championship team before then playing in the 2004 Port Power AFL Grand Final winning team.
Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world and popular as a casual way to exercise. It is a fast-action game with lots of running and jumping, and provides a good physical workout.
It involves a variety of skills including shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding, defence and much more. For kids and adults alike it helps to burn calories (an hour of basketball can burn 630–750 calories), build endurance, improve coordination and develop concentration and teamwork.
The Bulls Junior Develo-pment Program is designed for kids born after 2002 and in the past was very popular with over 100 kids participating. This year it will be run by current A grade grand final winning coach Matt “Promo” Promnitz who has vast knowledge with basketball and is a well known basketball identity.
Kids will learn the skills of the game under “Promo’s” guidance and then play modified 3 on three games. PPBA has invested in new balls and low rings designed especially for little Tippetts and Brogans.
The “Bulls” program will run Saturday mornings during term four and the same in term one next year. Soon flyers will be distributed through the schools to all kids from Reception to Year 4. Cost will be by way of gold coin donation. Parents are encouraged to get involved; you never know you may be the next Phil Smyth.
