There are now only four minor rounds left to go in Port Pirie Night Baseball after last Friday night’s games.
Teams need to now take control of their own destiny and either improve their position or consolidate their position on the premiership table.
With a final three competition for finals the top team goes straight into the grand final and have a weeks rest while the second and third placed teams compete for that remaining berth in the grand final.
Cats is currently on top of the ladder in the A grade and although mathematically they could lose the minor premiership, they only have to win one more game to assure themselves of top spot.
Panthers is improving as the season progresses and could still take second spot away from Tigers.
Panthers showed a glimpse of form last Friday night against an undermanned Tigers which was again without its top three pitchers due to work commitments.
Panthers batted first but were not able to capitalise against the pitching of Tigers Nathan Lynch.
Tigers did have a runner on base at the bottom of the innings after Cody Eglington hit safely but when Nathan Lynch was out on a line drive fly to short stop, Eglington was caught off his base giving Panthers the double play.
Kyle Templer pitching for Panthers then struck out Matt Crosnier for side.
Panthers scored one run in the top of the second innings when Kyle Templer singled to left field and scored on an error when Daniel Tucker hit back to the pitcher.
Tigers then picked up a double play and had Lenny Starke ground out to second base for side and stop Panthers from scoring further.
Panthers scored two more in the third after keeping Tigers scoreless in the second to take a surprising lead and looked as though they were heading for an upset win.
Scott Preiss singled through short stop and scored on Chris Patterson’s single to right field.
Patterson was put out at third base but Dale Kenyon reached base on an error at short stop and then scored on another error at short stop on Nathan Priess’ hit.
However Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead after hits to Nathan Lynch, Jeremy Matthews and Jordan Fuller.
Then after keeping Panthers scoreless in the top of the fourth innings, Tigers scored three more runs following a change inpitchers for Panthers.
Nathan Preiss replaced Templer on the mound but unfortunately gave up two walks and hit two batters.
That allowed Tigers to score and finish winners seven runs to three.
Tigers cemented second place on the A grade premiership table but are still no certainty for a grand final berth.
