Kurtis Willson has been playing tennis since he was four years old and all the hard work is continuing to pay.
At the Country carnival in Adelaide last week, Kurtis was the under 16 singles champ, displaying impressive skill for a thirteen year old.
Before joining his team mates in the under 14’s group, took on the competition by himself in the singles matches.
It seemed like the perfect opportunity for Kurtis to get a hit in before joining his other team mates.
Kurtis says he was nervous at first “because I was under age” but those nerves turned to excitement.
His play out in Adelaide was disrupted by the extreme weather but he was very happy with his win regardless.
He admits he thought the competition was tough before the games but thought differently after.
“My competitors weren’t as hard as I thought they would be.”
It wasn’t all hard work while he was there, stopping to watch the World Tennis Challenge games and coming back with a Pat Cash headband.
Mum Kaylene was pleased with her son’s performances, saying as the years go on, he has been getting better and better.
“He has improved heaps since he’s been getting older – even in the last year alone.”
Kurtis admires and aspires to be like many professional players, even finding it hard to choose a top two, but he finally settles on Roger Federer and Joe Tsonga.
While a professional career is on the cards, for now it’s off to high school for the young teenager.
