whassup... with up

Spring can certainly be quite a bizarre time for anyone in our great region and the last couple of weeks has certainly proven just how fickle the weather can be.

We’ve experienced weather extremes in the last two weeks and on both occasions the end result has been the cancellation of weekend sport.

One weekend it is extreme heat and the following week unseasonal heavy rains put paid to any action taking place.

The forecast for this weekend is a bit more promising, although the prognosis is for the later part of this week is for some more rain.

Hopefully it will dry up before the weekend.

The cream of Pirie’s junior tennis talent is off to Nuriootpa on Sunday to take on the Barossa in the annual inter-association clash.

Pirie has traditionally dominated these challenges but the last time we travelled to Nuri the Barossa combination did collect their first win.

The Pirie team this time around is a very strong combination and at the younger end we have an exceptionally strong 12 and Under and 14 and Under age group.

While on the juniors the Association has made initial selections for the Country Carnival to be held in January next year.

There was once a time when to be selected to represent Pirie at the Country Carnival was a huge honour.

Hopefully the event is returning to that sort of status.

The Country Carnival is back at Memorial Drive for the second year after such a long absence and the real highlight of the event is that is coincides with a new tournament that was held for the first time last year.

This event is a World Team Challenge that involved a current star and a former star doing battle in a Hopman Cup-style format.

Australia has up and coming Bernard Tomic and Pat Cash, while other stars include John McEnroe, Mats Wilander, Henri Leconte and current stars like Gael Monfils.

The weather looks set to become the major factor in deciding the eventual winner of the Spencer Gulf Tri-Series competition.

After two rounds there has not yet been a clear cut result and this is probably going play into Pirie’s hands to give them the third title in as many years.

Whyalla’s chances took a nose dive last weekend after the wet forced last weekend’s clash between Pt Augusta and Whyalla to be abandoned leaving the steel city with two games where the points have been shared.

The first week of this series saw Whyalla and Port Pirie fight out an exciting tie in extremely hot conditions.

Port Pirie plays host to Port Augusta this weekend and essentially with the way the series has panned out it boils down to the winner of this clash being crowned the winner for this year.

Pirie, with the home ground advantage is in the box seat and with players like Andy Fuchs showing some great form the Port Augusta men may find themselves in for a very long afternoon.

The AFL National Draft is on this afternoon and unlike last year when the fortunes of Lewis Johnston created an enormous amount of interest there is no local SGL talent nominated in this year’s draft.

However, there is some local interest with Orroroo school boy Luke Tapscott set to be picked up fairly early in proceedings. Tapscott has created a reputation for himself at North Adelaide and his big opportunity awaits him this afternoon.

Locally there has been a little bit of action taking place around the place with the news during the week that gun Port ruckman Michael Burford has left the Bulldogs and has signed with Jamestown Peterborough in the Northern Areas.

Obviously this takes Burford back to his home base and while he will be a big loss to the SGL and to Port the good news is that he is still in the Northern Zone for the State Country Championships.

As I was coming into Pirie on Monday night I noticed a fair bit of action taking place at Globe Oval.

It seemed that there was some training of some form taking place and that there was something like a summer sport taking place.

However, further down the ground it appeared as though there was a footy team hard at work in training.

It would be a safe bet that if it was at Globe Oval then the team in training was Sollies. Anyway the team looked to be working pretty hard and the numbers, for late November, were very good.

Who is your sporting inspiration? For many years mine was Greg Norman and in more recent times Lance Armstrong and Roger Federer have been high on my list of sporting heroes.

That was until last Sunday night when I sat down and decided to watch Sunday Night on Southern Cross for the very first time.

After hearing Mike Monroe introduce a segment with the intro of “you will be inspired” I was quickly intrigued to see what the story was about.

For once Monroe’s promise came through and the story about a wheelchair bound athlete, Kurt Fearnely and his trek along the Kokoda Trail was certainly one of those stories that just hit home that life for most of us, regardless of how tough we think it is, may not necessarily be so bad after seeing the way Fearnley goes about things.

Kurt Fearnley was born with Spina Bifida and has never had the use of his legs.

This has never stopped him and he has become known nationally as one of the best wheelchair athletes ever seen in Australia and possibly the world.

In the last couple of weeks Fearnley has just completed two feats that would leave even the most able bodied athletes in awe.

Three weeks ago Fearnley competed in and won the New York Marathon and the following week he set off on a trek that most of us would consider as being plain crazy.

For the last week Fearnley has successfully negotiated the Kokoda Trail and has become the first person to crawl the trail. It’s hard enough to walk the trail but to crawl it on your hands is just stunning.

Kurt Fearnley’s story is simply an amazing one and the story on Sunday night was certainly one of those very inspiring stories and what this young man has achieved makes Lance Armstrong look as though he’s just given up his trainer wheels.
