Boxing trainer Bob Burnell has discovered another boxing champion in the form of “tiny” Zac Celani.
Celani, 14, weighs only 41kg, and competed in the Boxing SA tournament in Port Adelaide at the weekend.
“He has been training with us for 12 months now and won his first fight the very first time he has competed,” Burnell said.
Celani, who travels from his hometown Moonta twice a week to train in Port Pirie, fought a “courageous fight” on Sunday to beat his slightly taller opponent.
James Riddle, 16, competed in the 60kg division against a Whyalla opponent that requested a re-match.
“The guy wanted a re-match because I won last time on a split decision,” Riddle said.
“I was a bit more confident because I have won against him before, and this time I won on a unanimous decision by the judges.”
“He will not be fighting me again!”
Ben Noonan, 14, competed in the 54kg division, but lost against the current Australian champion.
“It was a great bout, very tough fight, and good experience for Ben who is not far off the mark,” Burnell said.
Cameron Jasper, 15, was also keen to compete but could not get matched up on the night.
The next competition will be on November 22 with South Australia taking on Victoria.
