The Port Pirie Dirt Circuit club was represented by 17 drivers at theState Titles at the October Long Weekend
It was a fantastic weekend, and started with some very wet weather and ended with a percfect spring day.
In between though was the excitement.
Our modified drivers went out in the first round and showed what it is all about, with many gaining top three places.
Then it was the B grade openwheelers turn and they turned up the heat with a first place for John Brine.
Stan came out in the A grade wheelers and let everyone know he was out there with his roaring rotary.
Our club had some carnage with gear boxes which saw the end of the day for Stan Manners, Kevin Tapley and Dave Haldenby.
Thanks to some other drivers Dave finished racing in another car.
In the following rounds, Craig Manners had a great day mixing with the states best and finished up in the top five in the state.
Gary Penhall was a surprise, with great driving and lacking some horsepower he still managed to mix it with the states best.
Ned Hall had some scary moments with some touching of cars. He still managed to finish all races.
Ned came 3rd in the modified allcomers race.
In one heat Port Pirie finished with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions in the modifieds.
Rodney Patterson and Warren Morrell had some very close friendly racing with each other, maybe a bit too close according to officials.
Mark Stevens and Paul Seyfang were in the mix all day, making the other drivers work for their positions.
Brenton Cock saw the black flag for too much smoke in the 3rd round, but managed to fix it and won the 4th round with the Haldenby’s close behind for 2nd and third places.
Darren Tapley and John Brine were the only wheelers left representing the club.
In round four we all saw them in the same heat together, both fighting for top five places.
It was fierce competition, but after an incident on the track and with some controversy the drivers were sent infield and the race stopped.
The officials re-run the heat at the end of the round.
The drivers lined up again and the race went similar to the first one with John overtaking Darren on 3rd lap and Pirie got 1st and 2nd places.
John also raced in the final event being the open wheelers allcomers events and worked his way through the field and ended up with 2nd place.
Port Pirie ended up with third place in the states team points event the Dunn brothers with 224 points.
All drivers and supporters did Port Pirie proud. As our season heads to the end with our Funday and Burnout competition on the November 7 closing the year off, the drivers are more than ever chasing final points.
Also there are a lot of new members looking forward to this event as it is our come and have a go day, with the sponsors, mechanics and powder puff races.
Final year places are still up for grabs so it will be exciting and close racing all round.
