Golfers brave the heat

15 Jan, 2010 10:39 AM
A group of eager women braves the scorching heat in order to have a nice game of golf.

Every Wednesday, 12 members get together for some casual fun.

Summer Golf started once the Port Pirie Ladies Golf Club ended their

winter competition.

President Shirley Johnson said it was a great social day for ladies.

“We work up a bit of a sweat,” she said.

“It usually lasts for two hours.”

She said the morning started at 8am but some golfers would start as early as 7.30am.

“If you are good and hit fast you might get in earlier,” she said.

Johnson said they kept the game shortened to nine-holes and that they did not play if the temperature was above 36C.

“We bring some lunch for after the game,”?she said.

“Some ladies also bring some cards and will play in the afternoon.”

Ladies’ summer golf has tied in

perfectly with the arrival of new material for the club’s scrapes.

The scrapes were replaced with

granite fines from Pyramid Hill, in Victoria.

Johnson said it was a special mix for golf clubs.

“You do not have to oil it or rake it, just some smoothing,” she said.

“It makes the game easier.”

Nyrstar has fully funded the project, giving it a helping hand.

She said it would be good to play on the new surface.

“It is an open game and anyone is welcome to come along,” she said.

“Non-members will have to pay a fee of $5.”

Summer golf will last until March when the winter competition is ready to kick in.

The ladies club will have their opening day on March 31.

Johnson said the fun and games would be over.

“The serious part of it will begin,” she said.
