Cougars and Checkmates are first off the rank

08 Jan, 2010 11:16 AM

Fresh back from the Christmas break we look forward to the next two weeks of competition and then a week off for the Senior State Championships before all grades resume on the 30th of Jan.

There will be no U/16 games until this date as well which will free up players to have a go in higher grades.

A1 Women

First off the rank in this grade will be the game between Cougars and Checkmates. Cougars had a close contest against Cat’s but Checkmates had an easier run when they played Tigers before the break.

After a break like the one we have just had teams could have a fresh start for the run to the finals, although there will be a bit of stop /start between now and the beginning of March. Pitchers Justina Adams (Cougars) and Candice Moyses (Checkmates) will play key roles in the result of this game.

Checkmates Laura Wright and Chole Roros were consistent with the bat in the weeks leading up to the last game before Christmas.

Cougars started batting early in their last game and will look to Ann Russack and Felicity Walsh to lead the way in this game.

At 5.00 Tigers come up against Cat’s and will need to bounce back from their performances earlier in the season to be competitive in this game. They will look forward to the return from injury of Hannah Clarke and Emma Nykiell to strengthen their attack.

Cat’s players Phillipa Woolford, Krista Young and Tracy Franke batted well in their last game and will want to take that form into this game.

Men

Tigers Gold have a bye first up and the remaining game for this grade will be between Checkmates and Tigers Black at 1.30. Checkmates are the premiership table leaders at the moment and on past performances have been the more consistent team.

Tigers Black won their last game before the break and had been knocking on the door on several occasions prior to that.

Jabin Clayton kept the Tigers Gold batters in check in the pre Christmas game and if he can take this form into this game against Checkmates, they will find runs hard to come by.

Brother Kierran has also been playing well in the catching position.

Checkmates have a strong batting line up with Adam Bowering, Scott Wradle and Andrew Haren to be contended with. This will be a test for Checkmates to see if they are able to maintain their commitment and application.

A3 Women

Solly Cats have the bye for this first game which will leave Checkmates and Tigers to play their game at 3.15. Checkmates come off a bye before Christmas and Tigers lost a close game to Cat’s in the last game of 2009.

Coaches Scarman and Deed will want their players rested and ready to go after the break.

Danielle Wilson is the backbone of the Tiger’ s side pitching consistently well and usually picking up safe hits in each game as well.

Donna Smith and Rocky Bignell have been very useful with the bat for Tigers.

Checkmates have Trish Zubrinich on the mound and she has also been a consistent performer for them.

Evergreen Kaylene Lawlor continues to be a very important part of the Checkmates side and will no doubt continue to be supportive of her team mates.
