Can the Saints bounce back?

14 Aug, 2009 03:11 PM

A reminder to all clubs that this weekend, August 14-16, is the cut-off time for taking digital photos for the 10th anniversary souvenir DVD to be screened on September 4-5 – semi-finals weekend.

All digital photos need to be burned onto disc and handed to Joby Connor or emailed to him at:

The weather is starting to warm up, and with the mild temperatures and sunny days ahead, it certainly makes for a fantastic day out at the hockey.

Interested spectators will be treated to some classic games in division one women in round 16 with Clare Valley Cruisers up against Risdon on Friday night at 8pm and St Andrews pitted against Park Royal Panthers in the feature game on Saturday night at 6.30pm.

Panthers seemed to do everything right in last week’s game against Risdon and will go into this game full of confidence. With a near full strength side, the only player missing being Mae Camporeale, Panthers attackers linked up very well and used effective ways of setting up goals.

St Andrews have been on the receiving end of a couple of losses just recently and will be keen to bounce back this week.

Nicole Burley is lethal in front of goal and she demonstrated this in round 15 with two goals to her credit and if she is given any latitude will capitalise, while Brooke Smith too is very handy in the goal circle region and more than capable of scoring goals in this game.

At the opposite end of the field, St Andrews will need to really be on guard in defence to keep Panthers out of its 25-metre attacking zone, and will need Rhyleigh Bond, Demi Freer, Deb Ganley, Tess Mayes, Mel Lane and State U13 goalie Lauren Manuel to keep Panthers at bay.

With the Crystal Brook Show over for another year, the Brookies should front up with a full squad this week for its Div 2 women’s game against Park Royal Panthers programmed for grass 1 at 3.30.

It will be another tough assignment though for the Brook team who not only have trouble fielding 11 players, they also struggle in terms of strength on the field, while their opponent Panthers has a good blend of youth and experience and should take the points comfortably.

Saturday night games will revert back to Div 1 this week with St Andrews opposed to Park Royal Panthers in both men and women.

The 5pm game will feature the premier league men and with the gap closing up in recent times, St Andrews will consider itself a strong chance of an upset result against Panthers this week, but that all depends on who is available on the night and if the Saints are switched on to the challenge.

Panthers will start warm favorites and will most likely have young guns Dylan Roberts and Lee Kirchner back in the team this week.
