Four players were in attendance at the Port Pirie Baseball Reunion on Saturday night who collectively won a massive 21 Rice Medals for the Best and Fairest in the Port Pirie Baseball League.
The Rice Medal was instigated in 1971-72 after Glenelg Baseball Club stalwart and Patron of Port Pirie Baseball League, the late Tom Rice.
These four extremely talented baseballers were Graham Scarman who won seven medals, David Thornton six and Brett Fuller and David Badger each won four.
All four players were pitchers for their respective clubs.
Scarman played for Tigers and had a stint in Adelaide playing for the Red Sox as the team’s catcher and also during his career he pitched for South Australia against Victoria. He won four medals in a row from season ’62/ ’63 on.
Thornton played for both Prop Panthers and Falcons and won five medals in a row with Falcons from season ’84/ ’85 on.
While teaching in Port Pirie Badger played for the Cats and he has recently made a comeback, presently playing in Barmera.
Fuller who is currently playing, is a key player for Tigers and could still likely add another medal to his collection.
Meanwhile, during the reunion celebrations, two life memberships to the Port Pirie Baseball League were announced.
They were awarded to Alan Potter from the Tigers Club and Don Paterson from Prop Panthers.
Paterson has played around 700 games and has the distinctive honour of holding the record for the most games played in the Port Pirie Baseball League.
