Worried Crystal Brook residents have spoken out about a poisonous plant that was growing in the township.
But within a day of The Recorder
contacting the Port Pirie Regional Council about the matter, all the plants had been pulled up.
Resident Andrew Scott voiced his concerns about the Datura or Angel’s Trumpet plants growing along Mais Terrace, saying they posed a danger to children who play in the area.
“The plant is full of thousands of seeds that can be used to get a high,” he said.
Mr Scott said he saw reports on the
television news where children had boiled the seeds in water and ended up in
intensive care a few weeks ago.
“They said to report the plants because they are dangerous,” he said.
He contacted council “about three weeks ago” to tell them of the plants.
Margaret Whalan, who lives on Mais Terrace, said children were always playing in the creek.
“I have contacted the council, but was told it was not listed as a poisonous weed,” she said. The Recorder contacted council about the plants, but was told no comment would be issued until the plants had been investigated.
Mr Scott contacted the newspaper to say that all the plants had been pulled up the next day.
According to the Federal Government’s Health Insite website, “the flowers, seeds and nectars are poisonous”.
They are listed as a plant that “could cause serious illness in children who eat them”. Mr Scott said it was a “good result”, but “there are still a few seeds and buds” at the site.
