Triple trouble in classroom as twins lead a ‘double’ life

29 Oct, 2009 09:09 AM
St Mark’s College students, twins Tom and Ben Madigan, have shared most of their schooling years in the same class, but on occasions doing different subjects.

They are preparing for exams studying textbooks and going through past exam papers.

Tom anticipates going to Adelaide, hopefully studying a finance degree and Ben hopes to become a teacher. “First I will probably relax and enjoy myself when my exams are finished,” Ben said.

The most memorable event for Tom during Year 12 was the retreat.

“The three days that we spent as a whole year level were very deep and spiritual and I feel it made the group become a lot closer,” he said. “I learned during my final year that disappointments can knock you down, but with hard work anything can be achieved.”

Ben also felt that the most

significant thing in Year 12 was the retreat.

“I was able to relax and not think about exams for a change,” he said.

“Year 12 has given me the maturity to now go into the work force.”

Ottavia D’Agostino and her twin brother Anthony were in the same class at St Mark’s College up until year 9 and since then they have never shared a class and have done different subjects.

But Anthony said he still looked out for his sister and she helped him with some studies.

“We support each other,” he said.

The twins said they spend a lot of time together and have many of the same friends.

Ottavia will be deferring next year then will take up studies at university for an occupational therapy degree.

“I might seek a position back in Port Pirie,” she said.

Reflecting on Year 12, she said that the retreat was the highlight. “It brought people closer together,” she said.

After leaving school, Anthony plans to keep working at a supermarket and seek an apprenticeship.

Speaking on his final year, he said that during that time, friendships become much stronger and more meaningful.

The twins have been studying for their exams which start on Monday.

Twins Matt and Michael Boyle have shared the same classes throughout their schooling.

Matt said that the teachers treated them as individuals, although they would still get their names mixed up.

Reflecting on his final year Matt said: “Try your hardest every day no matter what it is, because, before you know it, one of the best years of your life is over.” Matt hopes to study engineering or business management in Adelaide next year while Michael will most likely study engineering.

Michael said it was good sharing his schooling with his twin because there is always someone there, you are never alone at school.

His brother said, “and we keep each other on task”. The most significant thing that happened for Michael in Year 12 was having the responsibility of being a senior.

“I learned that if I apply myself, I can achieve anything and it just takes hard work,” he said.

The twins admit they are fairly competitive – they usually compare results and play each other at sport.
