In the past five weeks Year 10 students from St Mark’s College investigated world poverty.
As part of this project, the SOSE students were asked to choose an international aid organisation and think of ideas to raise awareness of the work done by this organisation.
As a culminating activity, several groups decided to plan, bake, run and evaluate cake stalls outside businesses around the streets of Port Pirie.
The students had to consider risk assessments, safe food handling practices, organising and managing a financial “float” and customer
service.
This proved to be a successful project with students also organising events to run at both Bosco and Benedict campuses of the college.
Students chose to support various organisations including Oxfam, World Vision, Medici san Frontiere and Saint Vincent de Paul Society.
While fundraising was not a key aspect of the project, students were successful in raising more than $1000.
The teachers involved, Ms Mac-arthur and Ms Travers, said they were proud of their students’ efforts and their ability to organise their events and liaise with parents, deputy principals, businesses and council.
Ms Macarthur and Ms Travers would like to sincerely thank everyone for their support.
