Tagara Group has started work on the new Coles Express service station at the Centro Plaza shopping centre in Port Pirie.
As two 70,000-litre tanks were unloaded off a truck, onto a crane and into the ground, The Recorder watched.
A new job has been created by Tagara Group as a result of the project.
Regional construction manager Marcus Stephens said he expects the project to be finished by the end of April.
“It is reasonably on track,” he said.
He said the project was progressing well.
“We are digging a big hole, installing the underground tanks, installing a structural steel canopy and putting the shop on-site,” he said.
He said the company was “very happy” to win the contract for the project and that there had been a tendering process involved.
An area on the shopping centre complex has been fenced off to make way for the construction site.
Last year, The Recorder reported that 72 carparking spots at the shopping centre would be lost as a result of the project.
But there does not seem to be any problems with the car park reaching capacity at this stage.
The issue caused some debate last year, but the project received development approval.
